 My Nilambur 


Nilambur gets its name from word nilimba, which means Bamboo. But actually the place is fame for teak,hence it is also called teak town ,because of abundance of teak trees.

Nilambur comes in Malappuram district, there is 21 villages in nilambur consistuency.Nilambur is situated on the banks of chaliyar river in proximity to Nilgiri range.

The teaks for the construction of uru , a kind of ships those were used for maritime trade through beypore  port, were usually taken from Nilambur Teak Forests.The oldest teak plantation of the world in the Conolly's plot is just two km  from the town. . Nilambur teak plantation is particularly famous for the oldest teak tree in the world- Kannimari. Kannimari is revered sacred by the local tribes. was named in memory of Henry valentine canolly , the then Malabar district collector. Teak mueseum at Nilambur is maintained by the kerala forest research institute. which was established for the memory of the oldest known Teak plantation in the world. 

The town is also famous for Nilambur kovilakam where the Nilambur Rajas resided and ruled the land.Nilambur pattu utsavam an ancient festival falls in the month of January every year. 
All the people together make the festival a grant success.

The place is well connected with other parts of country by means of roads and rails. Nilambur railway station is connected to shornur railway station which is one of the largest railway junction in the state. Aswell as busroutes are well available to reach the place. 

The nearest airport is karipoor airport or well known as Kozhikode international airport which is hardly one hour from nilambur.
